Brief History of Karri Country Good Food
Karri Country Good Food was founded in 2002 by a few people who
attended a meeting in Pemberton initiated by Kate Haslam as Manager
of the Northcliffe Telecentre
The original intention was that people growing fruits and vegetables
in Northcliffe and Pemberton could have somewhere to offer them
for sale to other local people.
With help from Liz Troup,
Sonya Eaton, John Walters and Kate Haslam arrangements were
made to supply organic produce from Bay Organics in Busselton. Freight
was a problem though and this was eventually changed to other
supplier, with many members being involved in being “couriers” on
trips to Perth.
Before long "fresh produce markets" started
happening outside the Telecentre but soon Roy Moss and others
arranged for a move into the old video shop / butchers shop in
Wheatley Coast Road at a very favourable rent due to the generosity
of Brian and Zona Richards.
Since then many people have been involved both as committee members
and volunteers running the shop and packing produce. Without the
continued effort of all these people Karri Country Good Food would
not thrived. |
As
the shop became more established more goods were purchased for
resale and the business grew though always remaining true to
its original intention of providing an outlet for local growers.
In 2006 we had the opportunity
of buying the premises, again on generous terms from Brian and
Zona, though sadly Brian died before the sale was formalised.
Roy Moss and several volunteers did a fantastic job putting in
a partition, repainting and generally improving the shop front.
In
order to buy the premises the group had to become incorporated
and the it officially became Karri Country Good Food
Inc., though many still refer to it as the
'co-op'.
The committee has worked
hard to improve the range of goods on offer and keep the
roster of shop and packing volunteers going.
Membership has increased slowly
but steadily and the range of goods for sale is growing. Hopefully
we will soon be able to extend our trading days.
Volunteers are always needed
for the shop and packing rosters and to collect produce from
Perth. So anyone with a spare moment please contact Helen |
